How to Save Software Serial Numbers and Passwords
As a small business owner I learned lots of lesson about software the hard way. There is nothing more frustrating that losing your password or CD serial key code. When you buy software it either comes as a downloadable file over the internet or you get a CD with a manual in a box. Either way; you'll need to keep the user name, password and software code in a safe place but quickly available when you need them.
Through trial and error I have developed a system to remember all those numbers. I made a simple file in Microsoft Word called Software Access where I recorded all the information about the software as I purchased it. Then I made a backup copy of the software and kept the original software CD in my safety deposit box at my bank along with a recent printed copy of the software access file. Note some software will not let you make copies in that instance if something happens to your CD you'll need to go buy another copy at full price.
I have had a couple of CD's that started peeling and were unusable, but I had backup copies at the bank that helped me out of a jam. Also be careful what type of plastic CD colder you get because the clear or matte plastic sleeves in a CD binder for instance will remove the finish on a CD actually sticking to the face of the CD ruining the CD. I use paper sleeves and some of the software that I buy comes in paper sleeves and they work well. Nice CD jewel cases work well too unless you have lots of software then the jewel cases take up too much room in your safety deposit box.
If I ever had a fire or flood or other act of god not covered under my insurance policy it's good to know that I have a copy of my original Software CD's and their access information in a bank deposit box.
Keeping all the access information to your software in one place lets you easily find the information when you are trying to remember a password, reinstall software or upgrade.
As far as passwords go; I have thousands of user ID's and passwords so every time I sign up for a new account I open my access document and record the web address, user name and password. I have not lost any information since I developed this new system.
