How to Save Money, Paper and Ink

What is all the talk about saving ink by using a gothic font? We heard Green Bay Wisconsin University System Admins announced a way to save money on their printing costs by using less intensive ink fonts on their email prints. According to their findings the Arial font uses 30 percent more ink than the Century Gothic font. By changing the fonts to Gothic they will use 30% less ink when printing out emails.

I think that this is worth looking in to if you have a large company or corporation where you have one of those fancy machines where typically a gallon of ink can set you back several thousands of dollars. I have a small business with 2 cannon printers that each take a black cartridge ($23) and a color cartridge ($18) and I go through more than $500 worth of ink each year. I am in the process of evaluating different fonts with things that I print.

I ran into one person who said that the Gothic font is wider than Arial and thus makes lines span longer making the document longer and uses more paper. Paper is less expensive than ink but it is not a solution.

Others use font software like www.ecofont.com who's font software shoots microscopic holes in the font reducing ink by 25% without reducing the readability. There are software packages for home use the 3 year license is around $20, the office edition for 3 years is $20 per user and an enterprise license is available but the website does not have any prices listed.

Even a small office or home offices have found that using a less ink intensive font when they print large documents saves money and paper. One person who writes books changed his font from Roman font to Courier1 and got an extra 60 pages when he printed his book.

No matter what font you use you should check to see if that is the best font for printing. Just by changing the font on printouts that are not part of formal presentations can save you lots of money.
