To register a domain name you would go to a domain registrar who has been authorized by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). There are over 500 registrars that offer domain name registration services with varying prices. The .com domain extension cost varies from $7 to $35 per year. Some of the other internet domain types such as .pro are more expensive.
With over 65 million .com domain name registrations it's a good thing that there are different types of domain extensions available. If you find that the domain name you have chosen is already taken some of the domain name registrars have domain name suggestion websites that you can use to find another domain name.
The first consideration is that not all domain name registrars are the same. If you see an offer for free domain name registration, free parking or cheap domain renewal look for the strings attached. Some registrars offer a cheap domain registration but you have to pay upfront for a number of years or you are required to make a qualifying purchase. Some free domain registration registrars put a lock on your domain name then you are held hostage to use their services and may charge excessively for services such as hosting and email. Being able to transfer a domain from a registrar should be easy; if it's not there is a reason why. To register a .com domain extension expect to pay about $9 a year from a decent registrar. It would also be a good idea if you check on the cost and what the procedure is if you ask to transfer your domain name to another registrar down the road.
If you need to correct any information on your domain name be aware that any may put your domain name in a 60 day hold or temporary no change status. If you change your street address the rule is you cannot renew or transfer your domain for 60 days. This rule was established to prevent domain name theft so people could not change the domain owner's registration and then transfer it to themselves. The 60 day period insures that emails sent to the domain owner about any changes to the account will prevent the domain from getting into the wrong hands.
